State Museum of South Carolina

The State Museum of South Carolina is the largest, most comprehensive museum in the Southeast, displaying exhibits of art, history, natural history, science, and technology.  This museum provides a true telling of South Carolina’s history.  The museum is housed in the 1893 Columbia Mill textile building, which serves as their biggest piece of Carolina history.  They have many hands-on activities that are specially geared toward young children in their Stringer Discover Center.  Here children can explore a treehouse, a bridge, complete floor puzzles and read books about South Carolina. 

The State Museum of South Carolina is not only a great place for families to visit but it also caters to teachers and their students.  There are a number of different programs offered in various subjects that are sure to tie into lessons taught in the classroom.  The Science & Technology programs focus on the Solar System, electricity, exploring the atom and many more subjects.  The museum uses science theater, interactive activities and live demonstrations to help bring these subjects to life.  Their talented staff is also available to answer any questions from the children.
