Riverbanks Zoo

A must see in the Columbia area is The Riverbanks Zoo & Garden.  It is an amazing animal and plant attraction that has more than 350 different species of animals as well as over 2,000 animals from various parts of the world.  All of the animals are kept in areas that are designed to simulate their natural habitats.  The African Plains exhibit is a 2-acre reproduction of the African Savanna.  Here you will find giraffes, zebras, and ostriches living together as you would in Africa.   The Koala Knockabout is a terrific replica of Australia, where you’ll find a lovely display of koalas, wallabies, fish and reptiles that are native to the country.    For a look at some of the world’s most spectacular creatures you can visit the large mammal exhibit.  African lions, Siberian tigers, grizzly bears and Siamang apes are just some of the amazing animals you’ll find here. 

In addition to the animals, the Riverbanks Zoo is also home to a remarkable botanical garden.  According to Home and Garden Television it is considered one of the top 20 great public gardens in America.  With 70 acres of land and over 4,200 species of native and exotic plants this is truly a wonderland of natural beauty.  The entire botanical garden incorporates different areas for plants that live in common environments.  The Old Rose Garden is filled with lovely perennials, annuals, vines, and shrubs in addition to its gorgeous roses.  Of course, spring and summer is the best time to visit this fragrant garden.  The Shade Garden includes plants that thrive in the shade and there are many species that are not as well known as some others.  It’s a very interesting exhibit.
